Bio

While working as the City of Grand Prairie Public Art Manager, Tammy Chan observed unsheltered homelessness in the city. Seeing no resources - no shelter, no day resource center, no public transportation - Tammy retired early, and with the help of other community leaders, launched the Grand Prairie Homeless Outreach Organization (GPHOO) to help our unsheltered neighbors exit homelessness. Together, they learned about COCs, Coordinated Entry and Housing First at the 2019 NAEH Conference in Washington, DC, and took that information and many ideas back to launch the street outreach that finds the homeless, documents their current living situation, assists with critical documents and establishes medical care, while assisting those who are eligible apply for SSI benefits. Tammy believes art can change narratives and incorporates skills-based art training in their GPHOO Works Program. Tammy is an environmental artist, certified arborist, horticulturist, writer and now outreach worker.
